Bac Ninh old citadel, the typical of a military citadel was built in 1805 under King Gia Long of Nguyen Dynasty. Bac Ninh citadel is located today in Bac Ninh town.
According to experts, Bac Ninh citadel is the first citadel built in the shape of a hexagon in Vietnam. In terms of architecture, Bac Ninh citadel was the most beautiful citadel in northern Vietnam that time. The citadel covers an area of 545.000 m2, 9m high wall built with stone and bricks, surrounded by deep moat. In French time, Governor of Indochina identified Bac Ninh citadel as a typical architecture work.
Until now the citadel has not been renovated and Bac Ninh citadel has been seriously damaged. Remnants of the ancient citadel of Bac Ninh is three gates, part of the wall and the deep moat, two cannons, with the one attached to the guard post, and the 20m high flag post.
