A1 hill
A1 Hill is located in Muong Thanh commune, Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province, is the most important base of the French army at Dien Bien Phu. Hill A1 stretches in the Northwest - Southeast direction, including 2 tops: 490m in the Northwest, and 494 meters in the Southeast. A1 is the code Vietnam army set for the hill. The hill was captured by Vietnamese soldiers on the morning of 7th May 1954.
Currently, on the top of hill A1 on Northwest direction is a monument built in the style of "three mountains", high in the middle and low on two sides. Beside the monument is a 18 ton tank that that was brought in the battle by the French troops. Another important relic is the funnel-shaped hole as big as the "home pond". That was a crater created by explosive from Vietnam troops.
